In 1971 Richard Nixon initiated The War on Drugs. Two years later the DEA was established in an attempt to sandbag the coke wave already running rampant through the country. Throughout the 1970s, cocaine experienced its Golden age and by 1979 cocaine was considered “The Champagne of Drugs”.

In 1979, the DEA proposed the Model Drug Paraphernalia Act. Which means that any equipment, product, or material was illegal for use in manufacturing, compounding, converting, concealing, producing, processing, preparing, injecting, ingesting, inhaling, or introducing into the human body.

During this time, McDonald’s had the perfect 100mg spoon to simply stir sugar into your coffee. Coincidentally, these spoons eventually gained a cult like following with drug dealers, drug enthusiasts and fiends from coast to coast.

On the streets, the coffee stirrer gained the nickname “McSpoon”. Being 100mg, it was perfect for drug users to use the spoon to deliver a small mound of cocaine to their nose. Causing controversy, in early 1980, McDonald’s redesigned the McSpoon with a flat paddle taking the original spoon like end off the market completely. Fast forward to 1998, dealers were still using these spoons to measure heroin, cocaine and glucose which is used to dilute the drug or also known as “cut”.
